Dental Implants

Replace Missing Teeth

If one or more of your teeth are missing, there are a number of ways to replace them. An alternative to bridges, partials or complete dentures may be dental implants. Implants are used to replace missing roots and support artificial replacement teeth. They are comfortable and look like natural teeth.

What are dental implants?
A dental implant is an artificial root made of titanium metal. It is inserted into the jawbone to replace the root of the natural tooth. An artificial replacement tooth is attached to the implant. The implant acts as an anchor to hold the replacement tooth in place.

Who does this procedure?
Dr Termei is a Periodontists in our office. Dr Termei is a dental specialist who has further training in gum surgery, grafting and placing dental implants.

Who can get dental implants?
If you are in good general health, have healthy gums and have enough bone in the jaw to hold an implant, dental implants might be right for you. If your jawbone has shrunk or if it has not developed normally, you may be able to have a bone graft to build up the bone. A bone graft is a way of adding new bone to your jawbone. Dr Termei will tell you if bone grafting can be done.

What else should I know?

  • Several visits to your dentist or dental specialist may be needed until the process is done.
  • Checkups will be scheduled during the following year so your dentist can be sure your implants are working properly.
  • You will need to take very good care of your implants.
  • Implants can cost more than other kinds of replacement teeth and might not be covered by your dental plan. But in most cases this is a one-time cost, unlike other kinds of tooth replacement procedures.
  • Although rare, possible complications due to dental implants include bleeding, infection, numbness or injury to nearby muscles or the sinus cavity. In some cases, the implant may not be successful because it didn’t bond to the bone.

Invisalign

Clear Braces

Invisalign

Clear Braces

Downtown Dental Associates offers Invisalign as an alternative to traditional braces. Invisalign takes a modern approach to straightening teeth, using a custom-made series of aligners created for you and only you. These aligner trays are made of smooth, comfortable and virtually invisible plastic that you wear over your teeth. Wearing the aligners will gradually and gently shift your teeth into place, based on the exact movements your dentist plans out for you.

There are no metal brackets to attach and no wires to tighten. You just pop in a new set of aligners approximately every two weeks, until your treatment is complete. You’ll achieve a great smile with little interference in your daily life. The best part about the whole process is that – most people won’t even know you’re straightening your teeth!

Dental Bonding

Cosmetic Enhancements

Dental Bonding

Cosmetic Enhancements

Dental bonding is a procedure in which a tooth-coloured resin material (a durable plastic material) is applied and hardened with a special light, which ultimately “bonds” the material to the tooth to restore or improve person’s smile.

Dental bonding is an option that can be considered:

  • To repair decayed teeth
  • To repair chipped or cracked teeth
  • To improve the appearance of discoloured teeth
  • To close spaces between teeth
  • To make teeth look longer
  • To change the shape of teeth
  • As a cosmetic alternative to amalgam fillings
  • To protect a portion of the tooth’s root that has been exposed when gums recede

Because of some of the limitations of dental bonding, some dentists view it as best suited for small cosmetic changes, for temporary correction of cosmetic defects, and for correction of teeth in areas of very low bite pressure (for example, front teeth).

Next time you are in the office ask your dentist or a member of our dental team if bonding can improve your smile.

Porcelain Veneers

Cosmetic Enhancements

Porcelain Veneers

Cosmetic Enhancements

Porcelain veneers are wafer-thin, custom-made shells of tooth-coloured materials designed to cover the front surface of teeth to improve your appearance. These shells are bonded to the front of the teeth changing their colour, shape, size, or length.

Porcelain veneers can be made from porcelain or from resin composite materials. Porcelain veneers resist stains better than resin veneers and better mimic the light reflecting properties of natural teeth.

Veneers are routinely used to fix:

  • Teeth that are discoloured – either because of root canal treatment, stains from tetracycline or other drugs, excessive fluoride or other causes; or the presence of large resin fillings that have discoloured the tooth
  • Teeth that are worn down
  • Teeth that are chipped or broken
  • Teeth that are misaligned, uneven, or irregularly shaped
  • Teeth with gaps between them

Composite Fillings

Tooth coloured fillings

White or composite fillings have changed the way people with fillings smile! Teeth with large cavities and unsightly silver fillings can be restored with tooth coloured composite fillings.

Our team can create artistic tooth-coloured restorations that are beautiful, strong, and conservative. Highly polished and smooth, these restorations reinforce the tooth structure, and can help reduce plaque build-up that causes gingivitis and cavities.

Porcelain Crowns

Strong and Beautiful

Porcelain Crowns

Strong and Beautiful

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped “cap” that is placed over a tooth- to cover the tooth to restore its shape and size, strength, and improve its appearance.

The crowns, when cemented into place, fully encase the entire visible portion of a tooth that lies at and above the gum line

A dental crown may be needed in the following situations:

  • To protect a weak tooth (for instance, from decay) from breaking or to hold together parts of a cracked tooth
  • To restore an already broken tooth or a tooth that has been severely worn down
  • To cover and support a tooth with a large filling when there isn’t a lot of tooth left
  • To hold a dental bridge in place
  • To cover misshaped or severely discoloured teeth
  • To cover a dental implant
  • To make a cosmetic modification

A crown may be the solution to saving your tooth. Your dentist will evaluate your needs and the condition of your teeth.

Digital Dental X-Rays

Digital Dental X-Rays

Lights! Digital Camera! Action!

Dental X-Rays are pictures of the teeth, bones, and soft tissues around them to help find problems with the teeth, mouth, and jaw. X-ray pictures can show cavities, hidden dental structures (such as wisdom teeth), and bone loss that cannot be seen during a visual examination. Dental X-rays may also be done as follow-up after dental treatments.

The physical process for digital radiography is actually similar to traditional dental X-rays that use film: With digital radiography, your dentist inserts a sensor into your mouth to capture images of your teeth — but that’s where the similarities between conventional and digital dental X-rays end. Although it resembles the film used for bitewings and other X-rays, the digital sensor is electronic and connected to a computer. Once the X-ray is taken, the image is projected on a screen for your dentist to view.

There are several benefits to using digital radiography over traditional film X-rays:

  • Less Radiation: The equipment used in digital radiography exposes dental patients to much less radiation. In fact, digital X-rays use up to 90 percent less radiation than film X-rays. While conventional dental X-rays are relatively safe, digital radiography is an excellent option for those who take X-rays on a regular basis or for those who are concerned about radiation.
  • Higher Quality Images: The standard size of traditional X-rays can make viewing difficult, but digital radiography has done away with the “one size fits all” mentality. Once on the screen, digital X-rays can be enlarged or magnified for a better visual of the tooth’s structure. Brightness, contrast and colour can also be adjusted, allowing your dentist to see small cavities¬†easier. If you need a hard copy of your X-ray, digital images can also be printed out.
  • Transferring Dental Records: Digital images can be e-mailed to a dental specialist for immediate review. Digital X-rays are taking away the expense and time needed to copy files and mail them to another dentist, making it easier to transfer dental records or get a second opinion. As more offices are turning to electronic patient charts, computers may eliminate the need to mail dental records altogether.
  • Environmentally Friendly: Digital dental X-rays are better for the environment! With digital radiography, no chemicals are used to develop film.

Even though digital dental X -Rays produce lower levels of radiation then traditional X-Rays, Downtown Dental Associates still take all necessary precautions to limit your exposure by using lead apron shields to protect the body and only taking X-Rays when they are necessary.

Oral Cancer Screening

Early Prevention

Oral Cancer Screening

Early Prevention

Early Detection is Critical. Downtown Dental Associates believes strongly that detecting oral abnormalities early leads to more treatment options, potentially less invasive or radical treatments and better patient outcomes.

We Introduce the VELscope Vx Enhanced Oral Assessment System, which centers on a wireless, handheld scope that applies tissue fluorescence visualization to identify oral mucosal abnormalities early, often months or even years before they can be identified with the unassisted eye.

Cleared by the FDA, and approved by Health Canada, and the World Health Organization, the VELscope Vx is the world’s most widely used adjunctive device for the discovery of:

  • Viral, fungal and bacterial infections
  • Inflammation from a variety of causes (lichen planus and lichenoid reactions, allergy to amalgam fillings, etc.)
  • Squamous papillomas
  • Salivary gland tumors
  • Cancer and pre-cancer
  • Other oral mucosal conditions

An abnormal screening does not always mean the patient has cancer. If an abnormal screening occurs, we may choose to send a patient to a specialist to have a biopsy performed to be sure.
