Digital X-Rays – Low Radiation dental X-Rays

Dental X-Rays allow your dentist to have an in-depth look of your teeth, mouth and jaw tissues. X-Rays can reveal hard to find oral complications, such as cavities, bone loss and wisdom teeth that can’t be seen by conducting a regular dental examination. In essence, they give the dentist an extra tool to make sure nothing is missed.

The process of digital radiography involves a digital sensor being placed into your mouth that captures images of your teeth. However, while traditional X-rays use film, the digital sensor is connected to a computer that displays images.

Digital radiography has several advantages over traditional, film, X-rays:

• Emits less radiation. In fact, digital X-rays emit up to 90% less radiation than traditional X-rays. While traditional X-rays are relatively safe, opting for digital onces is adviseable for individuals who have to take X-rays regularly or for those who are worried about overexposure.

• Produces higher quality images. Images can be easily enlarged to get a closer look at all the details. Dentists can also edit the brightness, contrast and colour to see cavities more clearly.

• Sending dental records is easier than ever. Thanks to the computers, dentists can easily store, copy and send dental records to other dentists for a second opinion.

• Better for the environment. Because everything is digital, no chemicals are needed to develop the film.

To further minimize radiation exposure, Downtown Dental Associates uses lead apron shields to protect the body and only takes X-rays when absolutely necessary. Contact our office in Toronto to find out more information.
